I have purchased a wireless router, I now need to change my modem connection from USB to Ethernet, HOW?

My new wireless router can only connect to my modem by ethernet. My modem is supplied through Optus and is a Siemens Speedstream 4200. I currently use the USB port but need to change the connection to Ethernet, Ive had no luck with getting assistance from anyone. Thanks.

Alright, make sure your ethernet is not disabled shut down the computer and unplug the power supply from the modem. Power up the modem first then turn on your computer. Make sure you leave the modem off for at least 10 minutes. Same goes with a router if you have one. I've seen this several times on both cable and DSL. Since there is only one IP address available for most home accounts, the interface that is %26quot;initialized%26quot; and connected is the only one that works. When you power cycle, the modem configures the interface that is currently connected, hopefully the Ethernet in this case, The ISP doesn't have to change anything to change interfaces. The advice to power down the modem is the correct way to fix this. Have a good one :)

You need a CAT5 or 6 cable. It looks similar to a telephone wire. The cable should plug into your modem and then into wireless router. Lengths vary from about 2 feet to 75 or more depending where you want to put your router. Cost is usually a few dollars if you buy at an online computer store to probably 25 dollars at a bestbuy or similar. takes 30 seconds to complete.
If your computer has a network card or a Ethernet port, then use it.

If not, get a card appropriate for your desktop/laptop.

If you don't have either, then there's a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, or just get a USB WiFi adapter.
some of those modems has a separate MAC id for the Ethernet connection, you need to call your service provider and give them the ethernet ID
Wrong router. You should buy a dsl router, this replaces the modem.
Remove and Un-install your modem software. And then re-install it, but this time indicate that you will be running it via Ethernet. Make sure that after you do this that you can connect to the internet. And make sure that everything is running smoothly with your modem.

Now, for the router. If your router has a install CD run it, and it should be easy and smooth. If not, try this.

Run a Ethernet wire from your computer into one of the Ethernet ports in the back of the router. (Make sure its not the singled off port, like all of them look the same, but one has more space between it then the others and might say on it that its the main connection port or whatever.) And then run a Ethernet port from your modem into that main port on the router. Login to your modem by putting your default gateway into the address bar, it will look like this. 192.168.1.254

To find out your default gateway. Click start-%26gt;run-%26gt;cmd

Once, that black box is open type %26quot;ipconfig%26quot; (without parenthesis).

And it will tell your default gateway, and type that into your address bar of your internet explorer, or whatever you use.

Then you will need to login to your router, depending on the router it will have a different username and password. Most routers standard password and username is %26quot;Admin%26quot; So try that if not look at this site for your routers login info.

Once, your in their your going to have to make sure that you have a ppoe connection setup. It will be most likely under setup. Once you do that it will most likely ask for a email address and password to logon to your isp network. Your ISP should of gave you one. Put that into it, and try to connect.

If all else fails, contact your routers support hotline. Or your ISP.
