I just connected to my uni's VPN, and everything except for Skype and AIM works perfectly. Skype and AIM won't even let me log in. I've tried changing the proxy settings so that they match my web page settings and changing the ports to match, but it still won't work. Help? Is there any way I can get Skype and AIM to work with VPN?

However, to get this to working with a router, is a different issue because your one sharing machine actually is a router in this setup. Setting up dual routers is not for the uninitiated to network routing! (It can be done, just be sure the computer issued IP and the router issued IP are on different networks)

I've got a 54gs router which is may be the same as yours. It doesn't have very good functionality for blocking outbound internet access, and you cannot throttle bandwidth on a per user basis.



They can still download stuff through ports 80 and 443, but you could limit their options by blocking any ports above 443.



If you find the MAC address of your neighbours computer(s), you could set up an %26quot;internet access policy%26quot; specifically for you neighbour which is configured to allow access 24 hours/day.



Then under %26quot;blocked services%26quot; add the user-defined port range of 444 to 65534 / TCP



Alternatively you could just configure QoS and set high priority for http (80) and https (443).

I have a very nice laser jet printer, and it uses a parallel port to connect to a printer (the 24 pin variety, I think), and I recently got a new laptop that only has parallel ports and USB ports on them. Now the printer has been rendered useless to me. I was wondering if any such converter exists that changes a port from the 24 pin parallel port style to the 9 pin communications port style OR USB. Or perhaps a parallel printer wire that goes to USB... If anybody knows how I can get my printer to work with my laptop, I would be greatly appreciative...

I have done this before in a similar situation, but I don't think it keeps it as a permanent change. So, if you happen to unplug it and plug it back in, it may not be the same drive letter.



Normally Windows sets the drive letter in the order you connect them to your computer, so I would just make sure that you connect your external hard drive first before anything else. If you normally have something else plugged in before the external, I would recommend changing the drive path in your music player to G: or whatever else, so you don't have to keep doing this.

first verify that ur laptop isnt supposed to be usb2.0 .. if it is then get the proper driver reinstalled ...usb2.0 is hardware so you either have it or you dont and if you do have the hardware then it needs the proper driver ... sometimes the driver gets messed up ... anyway they do sell an addon card to give you usb2.0 and it does make a big difference in external drive performance over usb1.1

i've been trying for weeks to get shareaza and azureus working through my netgear wirleless router. but i can only get around 2kb/s download. i've done everything on the instructions to set it up. has anyone else had this problem and did they fix it. if so how. i dont wanna go back to my speedtouch modem. with that i was getting average speeds of around 450kb/s download. ive set up port forwarding, tried changing the port number. need more ideas. ive also tried the wiki pages, but still have the same problem. Okay...... what you need to do is this:



1) Log into the router and find out the range of it's %26quot;address pool aka address range aka DHCP pool%26quot; (meaning the number of addresses it will assign to computers).



For instance, your router might use an address of 192.168.1.2, and PC's will be assigned IP addresses from 192.168.1.3 to (lets say) 192.168.1.50.



2) Once you have the %26quot;end%26quot; address (again, lets say 50), you need to change the IP address of the PC to one that is OUTSIDE of that range. Given that our example has an address of 192.168.1.50, your PC should have an address of 192.168.1.51



3) You will then need to forward the ports to the new address of the PC.

now the other comp on this wireless network doesnt have to do this coz when he tests his port it says its open, even if he randomizes the port, now i put in the same port number that he has and it worked but when he changes the port , mine closes.



ive gone to portforward.com, so please dont give me a link to intructions, id like to hear what YOU have to say, if u know anything about this...

whatever it is that your trying to do or let through the firewall works like this - when it hits your router and it is a port that is blocked it stops there because the routerhas no other instructions to do anything with it and that's where forwarding the the port comes in it tells the router what to do with the request that came in. If your your going to forward any ports you need to set your computers ip to a static one. If it's set to dynamic the ip could change everytime you reboot and the router can't find your computer then. So start by setting a static ip. Go to start- settings- network connections- and right click on the local area connection of your internet connection and go to properties.now scroll down to internet protocol(tcp/ip) and manually set this in the range that you have set in the router. once set then the router knows how to find your computer because it will always have the same ip. Now forwarding the ports it will usually ask which port and a destination address or ip and it should be simple now just type the port you want to forward and the ip you configured your computer to always have and you should be done. Other people that are on your network can do the same thing except they can't have the same ip as you so select something close to yours usually go in order like 192.168.0.10 then next computer 192.168.0.11 and so on then then forward that same port except the destination ip would be the ip for there computer so you could have the same port forwarded to multiple computers and everyones works. Hope this helps a little if you more help just let me know it's alot easier to do then it is to try to type it all out

adjust your security settings to default and check your firewall logs for the blocking info....then you can configure your firewall to either make an exception for the program or set it to allow the program to run. Leave the utorrent settings to their default and also select to randomize the port...port forwarding does not always work with a router and modem configuration because you have 3 different mac addresses and 2 differentips so the port doesn't always transfer right. The reason you can get there when the other pc is on is the routers firewall is set to allow that pc to connect and therefore has opened that port, when he disconnects, the ports closed.....so just set your firewall to allow the pogram access and you should be fine.

You need to go into the settings in your email client program and find Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings. Just change the port number from 25 to 587.

A couple of things: If the IP address stayed the same after a move, it's probably configured as static IP address, not a dynamic one assigned by DHCP (else it would be a surprising coincidence).



That being said, your problem is most likely that you setup does not find a proper DNS server to resolve domain names and/or does not find the gateway (i.e. router). Double-check in your network settings that you network is indeed configured for DHCP and that it receives DNS information from DHCP as well (DNS can be statically configured while using DHCP).

Ok, yesterday i wanted to update my ipod so i plugged it in and i got an error message about my USB malfunctioning and then my ipod was frozen on %26quot;do not disconnect%26quot;. I unfroze it and tried again. Same thing. Then I changed ports and same problem. I kept unfreezing and got rid of the songs I added thinking them might be messing it up. I plugged it in and I thought it was fine. When I checked it the next day when I wanted to use it everything was gone. Well it might be a new problem with itunes because i know when i got the newest one it wouldent open at all and i had to go on a site to get an older one but its probobly not that. maybe if you run out the battery and charge it up again. it worked for me once. what kind of ipod is it because when i had a shuffle it always did that and for some reason throwing it helped...:)

I can't plug any USBs in?

I constantly get an error saying USB Device not recognized. Nothing works, not my ipod, not my camera, not my brothers ipod - ive changed ports, ive changed cables - absolutely nothing. I've restarted my computer, I've plugged out my computer. My internets been having issues. The weird thing is everything that's plugged in before i restart my computer works (my printer, my mouse, my keyboard...) I've ran a scan for hardware defects via the command prompt (sorry if my wording is off I've never done commands)... sfc/scan now was the command and it essentially told me that the files required must be copied into the DLL cache which means Absolutely zip to me and to install the Windows cd [i have xp] ... I have the cd but i have no idea how to back up anything and I'm afraid i'll lost everything. Your router, if it even has an outside port, should be using port 8080, not 80. Nevertheless, many ISPs block port 80, and changing the port will protect you somewhat from attacks.



You need to edit the httpd.conf file. There is a port field which should be simple to change.



You might be able to find httpd.conf in /etc/httpd/conf/.

You shouldnt need a second sql server instance running, so im not sure why you are trying. You more than likely will need to change the port as that will be application specific...dont forget to allow any port forwarding through firewalls and routers. You could also try a different sql software like MySql from http://www.mysql.com , its free and powerful.

The message is telling you %26quot;The device you plugged into the USB port is capable of using USB 2.0 and you have plugged it into a slower USB port.%26quot;.



In other words the message is for the device (not your computer).



If you had a desktop you would be able to purchase a USB 2.0 card, plug it into a PCI slot, run the software (that came with the new card) and you would then have USB 2.0 which is quite a lot faster.



Since you have a laptop you don't have that option so all you can do is ignore the message.

First -- it depends on what youre working with here.



What version of Windows.

If its Windows XP or above, and you plug USB 2 device that always functions as a USB 1.1, then you have to go into your bios settings and switch it up.



I have done this -- because XP supports USB 2 devices.

So for someone to say you have to change motherboard, or hard ware is only half right -- because it depends on your operating system if it supports USB 2.



If it does you must go into your BIOS settings and adjust that, because by default your motherboard might be set to the USB 12mb/sec transfer rate, rather than the highspeed USB.

You cannot make a USB 1.0 port to work as a USB 2.0 port as its a hardware thing and the speed differs a lot. But some motherboards require that you install SP2(service pack 2) of Windows XP for some USB 2.0 ports to work at its actual speed. In case you don't install SP2, the same USB 2.0 ports work at the speed of USB 1.0.

In my Windows XP Firewall advanced exceptions I have something called' Web Server (HTTP)' that uses both internal and external port 80. EDIT: If you're getting that error, then your torrent program is overtaxing your router. If you probably want to buy a router that can keep up- like the Linksys WRT54GL- and install performance firmware on it like Tomato. That handles torrenting very well.

I just installed a pci Firewire/usb 2.0 card in my computer , The device manager shows the enhanced 1394 and usb 2.0 hubs installed, and set it up as per instructions, and used many different software packages( Cyberlink powerdirector 3, Pinacle 9.3, Nero express) and it's the same story, No dv detect! I have been fighting with this problem for some time with a Lite-on standalone that has dv hook up with the same results, No dv detect I am just about ready to just use the svideo/w/standalone and convert the Vob's and say screw it, If you figure it out please let me know!

On page 87 of the Elura manual it states that the this feature is designed when using the camcorder as an analog to digital converter. If you open up the digital editing software it should automatically recognize the camcorder. I suspect that your firewire card is not being recognized by the PC. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution because I use a Macintosh computer which comes with firewire capability from Apple.

It sounds like your firewire card isn't working properly. Go to Device Managager and see if you have an entry for an IEEE 1395 Bus Host Controller. There should be some sort of device listed under this heading (mine shows a Texas Instruments Controller). If there isn't anything listed the comp can't see the card. Remove the card and try installing it again. A common problem is not seating the card in the slot correctly - make sure it's pressed all the way in. When the comp starts up it should tell you that it found new hardware. If not, and the card is properly seated, there is a bigger problem with either the card, the comp, or Windows. You can rule out the card by trying it in another slot (if you have one) or in another comp. If it doesn't work in another slot or comp, probably a dead firewire card. You can rule out the slot in the comp by putting another device (such as a modem) in it and see if Windows finds new hardware. You can rule out Windows by making the CD drive bootable and trying a %26quot;Live%26quot; bootable Linux CD distro (it's safe and won't do anything to your Windows installation). Knoppix is popular and works well. My bet is an improperly seated card. Good luck.

the firewire system is two way, you do nothing to change a port from DV in to DV out. when you want to put a program back to the camcorder, you use %26quot;Print to Tape%26quot; option and out it goes. what you may have done is forgot to put the camcorder in playback mode.

You are confusing the maximum specs of the BitTorrent protocol with what is actually available to you. You can't download faster than 35 kb/s if the seeder isn't uploading faster than that. And you can't have more than 13 peers if there aren't more than 13 people who want the file along with you.



The port forwarding, which may or may not be limiting you, is controlled by your router, if you have one. If not, then it is controlled by any firewall program you have running on your computer. In your router, you need to forward the port(s) that your client is using to your computer's IP address.

Change the login protocol to HTTPS or 443, which is SSL.

I don't see how this change would help you but thats how you change it.



If you want another port then you'd either need to find specialized software or dig through your router's firmware.

If you are using DSL or cable, and have wifi, then yes you should be able to access your router by typing in your default gateway into a web browser exp, http://192.168.1.1 if this was the default gateway to your router, you would be able to configure the router from there. If this is the case check out www.portforward.com and search for your router type. If you Have wifi, wich is the same type of Broadband that cellphones use, then you will not be able or need to Port forward. If you have windows XP, one suggestoin woudl be to Patch the tcp/ip.sys file to allow more than the default half open connectoins. Google for tutorial on that, there are many. Hope this helps

Can anyone help me understand uTorrent and what I need to do to keep it the fastest?

I downloaded uTorrent and I've been downloading files for a couple weeks. I searched a YouTube video that had suggestions for %26quot;making uTorrent faster%26quot;. I know some of the info probably wasn't extremely reliable so I only made a few changes, and it seemed to help a little.



Recently, I started getting a lot of %26quot;connection closed by peers%26quot; messages and my download speeds are way slower. I searched forums for help but everybody talks with computer lingo I can't even begin to understand. Here are a few things I've changed:

-Port = 45682

-Connection Type = xx/1Mbit



I have no idea what either of those are, should I keep them that way or what? For the first week I had uTorrent, it was very fast and reliable but now it's slower and inconsistent. I know some of it has to do with the %26quot;seeders%26quot; but it can't be only that.



If anyone can help me please let me know, and how do you learn things like this so I can understand my computer more? Thanks :)

Now you mentioned seeds, leechers are just important as they share the parts of the file they have to you also



100 seeds and 100 leechers is better than 150 seeds (usualy)

first off let me say i dont care what you are using limewire for (legit or otherwise) it is not a good system. I worked in IT in college and saw quite a few people come in for help because limewire messed up their computer. you could try to disable your firewall altogether and see if limewire works but that will leave you open for as long as the firewall is down. if limewire works when the firewall is down then you know its the firewall, if not there is something else going on with limewire. i cant really be more thorough than his without being able to see your computer, what operating system you're using, or limewires internal preferences.



that being said, try to get a torrent application like bittorrent, azerus, uTorrent (my personal favorite), or tomato torrent (for macs) that you are comfortable using, they take a little bit of effort to set up but work way better and are way safer.

You probably have to keep it connected to xbl while you're trying to do it. If you have a lonksys router, then just have you're ISP (Internet Service Provider) go onto the setup page and there should be a tab at the top for gaming. I am running Ubuntu. I recently switched over from Windows Vista with a reformat. A lot of my hardware is very temperamental. I have 2 USB hubs chained together, and it seems like my USB hardware (Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, external sound card, MIDI hub, USB hubs, HP Printer/Scanner) work sometimes and don't others. I also have a TV I use as a monitor, and that sometimes is fuzzy. With the USB ports though, many times, I have to unplug and replug the device in to get it to work. I have to change ports, and when I get something that works, if I restart the system, it's a roll of the dice as to what you're going to get when it boots back up. Also, my ATI graphics card doesn't work to its full ability either. How do I deal with these hardware issues. I have a Toshiba Satellite. Please help, thanks.

To get your ATI graphics card working at full capacity you need to go to System%26gt;Administration%26gt;Hardware drivers and enable the ATI. It will download a driver for the card. The tv problem could also be fixed by the driver.

The router already has a static ip address, so the only thing they could have possibly meant was the printer. The link below should help you set an ip address for your printer.

You leave the printer set on DHCP, so it will ask the router for its address each time it boots. For months I have been able to torrent with no problem at high speeds with my port opened.



However, recently (or suddenly) my download speed plunged to unprecedented levels. ( Constantly %26lt; 10kb/s as compared to before: up to 1200 kb/s )



The problems are:



1) There are many seeders.

2) My settings have not been changed (at all) whatsoever.

3) Trying different torrents have offered no remedy.



I am somewhat convinced and justified to believe that my ISP is playing dirty.



I tried a few measures but to no avail:



1) Changing port.

2) Forced encryption.



And yes, how can I determine in what way are they throttling BT traffic? Eg. Blanket throttling on all encrypted traffic / specific ip throttling etcetra

Quite a few ISP's are naughty and LLU you without permission. My ISP Eclipse will LLU you to Tiscali if Tiscali enable your exchange. I've noticed a big drop in speeds since they did this to me.

t's only a 3 day trial, but it's 100% free and requires no payment info. This should allow you to max out your connection, see how it varies throughout the day. It should give you a pretty good idea of how much traffic shaping your ISP is subjecting you to.



Many ISP's throttle less at night when demand is less. See how it is early in the morning. I did a few hitnews trials (1 per email address) and I was able to max out my 8meg ADSLmax connection to just over 1000KB/s, but only gone 2AM in the morning.



You can use a usenet client like grabbit and http://www.nzbindex.nl/ to find things to download.



Then run a few speedtests like http://www.speedtest.net/ Often ISP's will allow the speedtests to run at full speed to suggest the ISP is faster than it actually is.





I know mine throttle on content. I used to be able to double my speeds on grabbit by encrypting all traffic with SSL and using port 995 but even that doesn't work anymore.

The first thing to do is read your terms and conditions, and any fair use policy. Do they say anything like you should not use torrents? does a fair use policy cap downloads?



Once you start downloading torrents it is easy to download huge amounts. Some ISPs include uploads in any allowances.



It could be that they are throttling *ALL* your traffic. You would not see it the same on web browsing as that does not need bandwidth the same, similarly email.



Other than that there are quite sophistcated methods of monitoring traffic avaiulable to ISPs.

Using wifi from my ISP means that I have no access to the wireless router. It is somewhere on a mast in my area. Thus I cannot do port forwarding and other stuff. Utorrent keeps telling me some port is not forwarded properly,can I do anything about this? I have tried changing port numbers to no avail,which port number could I use?

Yes it is possible. You need to enable internet connection sharing in your network properties. Right click on your wireless connection, get properties. Click advanced. Then enable internet connection sharing.



You will need to use a hub/switch between your xbox and laptop or use a crossover cable,or that connection will not work.

As far as I have been able to ascertain there are no expansion slots that would accept a USB 2.0 expansion card. The only expansion slot is for the airport extreme card which unfortunately is not a standard expansion slot. Although it looks very similar to the mini-PCI standard.

There is nothing that can convert a USB 1.1 port to a USB 2.0 port externally as the low speed of USB 1.1 is the limiting factor.

The only possibility I can think of is replacing the USB controller chip which is soldered to the logic board or possibly even integrated into a larger multi purpose chip making it impossible. Even if such surgery is possible there is no guarantee it will work



It is possible to over-clock the CPU of the eMac. As the CPU is a low power unit, there is plenty of headroom. Over-clocking on the eMac however is not for the inexperienced. Soldering of some very small SMT (surface mount) resistors is required.



It seems obvious to me that the eMac is built with a rather deliberate set of limitations. Planned obsolescence.

no. This is a hardware constraint. If you have empty PCI expansion slots on your motherboard, you can buy a PCI card that has USB 2.0 ports.
USB 1.1 and 2.0 have different hardware. The chip that makes and receives the signals is a different version in 2.0. So 2.0 is backwards compatible but 1.1 is not forwards compatible. You need different hardware. I'm not sure how you do this on a Mac because they're self-contained, but for a PC you can buy a card with USB 2.0 ports on it. You might be able to get something like this for the Mac. I don't know if it has card slots, but they might make something that plugs into an existing port, like the Firewire port.
An USB port is hardware. You have revision 1.1, which is technically different compared to revision 2.0. You cannot do anything to %26quot;upgrade%26quot; from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0, sorry. As for the speed which you mention, I assume that you are referring to your processor speed? You could overclock your processor, but this is not advised for someone who is not experienced such as yourself, as you could very well ruin your hardware.

TRIPLE CHECK, that you are typing all your information correct, and that caps lock is NOT on. if that is not the case, try reseting your PC to clear the RAM and reset the ports. If this doesn't work try reseting your router and modem. Check your windows firewall and make sure it is OFF, and that no exceptions are allowed, if you have a virus protector turn it off until you are done playing. If by now none of this has worked, open your program files and find World of warcraft, run the repair bot and let it go, check all of the boxes when it prompts. It is tuesday and sometimes the servers take a while to come back up, so give it a few hours.
