I had a really good cable connection through Comcast, until yesterday I started using bittorrent to download some old movies.
All the time I have bittorrent client on I get dropped internet connections, websites become unavailable, DNS requests fail, %26quot;INTERNET%26quot; light on my router gets yellow, which means that it loses or resets the connection to the cable modem. I never saw this light going yellow before.
Now I stopped the bittorrent client and connections seems to be good again.
I tried to bypass the router and connect my PC directly to the modem, but I still had the same problem with connections as long as bittorrent client is running.
Bittorrent by it's nature causes many incoming connections from other clients and they may download chunks of data from me, as well as many outgoing connections.
I don't think Comcast is supposed to look at the contents of the traffic, also it shouldn't matter for internet provider how many TCP connections there are.
But that's what I observe: quality of my cable connection correlates to if I have bittorrent running or not.
So is this possible that Comcast tries to hamper my connection in some ways based on the torrent client? Should I just change TCP port to something different so that middlemen can't guess what is that? Or maybe Comcast penalizes me based on the number of incoming connections?
Any guesses or insights insights into this problem?

Comcast doesn't have a right to block torrenting. But they do have a right to manage their networks. When you open a ton of TCP connections, whether it's because you're torrenting or because you're hosting a server, you slow down the Internet for everyone else in your neighborhood.
Comcast's current policy is that anyone using more than 75% of their allotted bandwidth for an extended period of time gets pushed to the end of the line. They don't block your packets, but they'll give them a lower priority. So if you're trying to torrent a movie and someone else wants to check their email, Comcast's servers will let that other person's request go through first. You'll have to wait at the back of the queue.

How can I block a specific Mac program from accessing the local network?
On an Intel desktop Mac, I want to stop a video game from accessing the local network without disrupting any other networking for other software or system programs. I looked through the firewall options in System Prefs, but I didn't see a way to stop just that program from communicating with the network. I then tried to change the port number for networking within the game itself. It didn't seem to work. Basically I want the game to still work on that machine, just not be able to see or communicate with other games on the local area network. Problem connecting to Battle.net?
I installed warcraft 3 but I am getting the error message

What is the easiest/cheapest way to network between two computers on the internet?
My friend and I would like to share information with one another. We don't live in the same house, but are pretty close and use the same internet provider. We have dynamic IPs, but they rarely if ever change. Is there a way we can do this? I know it probably requires three things, sharing setup properly, some sort of ftp or similar program, and the settings on routers changed for port forwarding or something, but beyond that I haven't a clue how/where to begin.

How do I add root privileges to my account on Ubuntu. I already know how to login as root and that is not what I want. I want to be able to login and make changes to places other than %26quot;/home/my username/%26quot;. I do not care about the security risks.

In the %26quot;add account%26quot; section to set up POP access, there is no option to indicate that you are accessing an SSL server. Sure you can change the port address (in this case 995) but not tell yahoo that is it is an SSL. Therefore it returns no mail.

It basically tells you how to POP mail from your other accounts into Yahoo. Problem is - IT DOESN'T WORK. My internet download speed is 176 kbps and upload is 98 kpbs and my bittorent download is 2.37 gb and 1.99 gb is completed,time elapsed is 1 day 10 hours and the speed is 22.9 kB/s (avg.17.2 kB/s).
The seeders are 83 (648) and peers are 5(482) why is it so slow and how should i speed it up and will it help if i change the port number and how should i open a port.How should i get it to 100 kb/s or 500 kB/s.

The more seeder/peers there are (seeders are more useful than peers), the faster your download will go. Likewise, the faster the seeder seeds, the faster your download goes...but a lot of people limit their seeding speed so that it will not take too much of their computer's resources to help other people download (like me, I limirt it to 10kb/s).
So essentially, there's nothing you can do to speed up torrents...just hope that more people will finish downloading it and seed!

I bought a Trendnet TV-IP110(w).
I have modem %26gt; router %26gt; wireless
The DHCP is on the router, and wireless is just acting as a gateway, no firewalls or anything.
If on the router i forward port 80 to an IP for one of the cams i can view it by going to my public IP, IE http://25.255.255.25, i get promoted with the cams login info and i can view the cam.
Now that is fine for one cam, but i have 4 cams.
How can i make this an easy way to view ANY of the cams?
They all have different IPs. thus i have to change the port that is forwarded each time?
Any suggestions?

Its the iPod with the four touch buttons in a row above the touch wheel. So its old, but I took the iPod apart and charged the battery with another iPod taken apart. So the battery is fine.

That tells you which ones you need open and which protocol the ports need (UDP). You haven't given the info on your router, but once you log onto your router's setup page it should be easy. It will be called port forwarding or something like that.

New to downloading torrents, please help with speed...?
Hello. I recently found a file that I realized I can't find elsewhere besides through a torrent.
I normally would use rapidshare/ megaupload to download it, but I can't find it uploaded.
I downloaded BitTorrent 6.1 and managed to download the file (260MB), but at EXTREMELY slow speeds (average of 3kb/s- maxing at 12kb/s).
I haven't changed any of the settings, as I do not know how to properly change them.
I'm pretty sure I need to change the port settings, but I am not sure what part needs to be configured.
I tried to read on this subject, but I read multiple things about port forwarding which I couldn't really understand.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, i have Azureus and im having problems with speed and ports.
First of all, occasionally when i start downloading a torrent, the icon is yellow and it says it has NAT Problems. But the thing is, that doesn't affect the speed too much. But when i change the port, it fixes the problem, the icon goes green, but the speed is unstable. One second it's 50k/s, the next it's 15k/s. Please provide in detail how to fix this problem.

to change port you have to configure a rule in firewall to use port 25 look and se what program is using that port then shut the port down in firewall and type in port 587 for th e program that needs it, you should be able to find it in the program itself

As for ways to improve your download speed, first check in your settings (varies by the bit torrent client you use) to make sure you don't have a limit set as to the maximum dowload rate possible. Also, removing or increasing the maximum upload speed can help, as it is possible to set it so that you can restrict who you upload to, based on their upload speeds. If people are doing that, you won't be recieving the files because they aren't sending them to you. Ummm.. other than that, sometimes if you just wait the speed will increase over time, but it can take a long time sometimes.

Alright, make sure your ethernet is not disabled shut down the computer and unplug the power supply from the modem. Power up the modem first then turn on your computer. Make sure you leave the modem off for at least 10 minutes. Same goes with a router if you have one. I've seen this several times on both cable and DSL. Since there is only one IP address available for most home accounts, the interface that is %26quot;initialized%26quot; and connected is the only one that works. When you power cycle, the modem configures the interface that is currently connected, hopefully the Ethernet in this case, The ISP doesn't have to change anything to change interfaces. The advice to power down the modem is the correct way to fix this. Have a good one :)

You need a CAT5 or 6 cable. It looks similar to a telephone wire. The cable should plug into your modem and then into wireless router. Lengths vary from about 2 feet to 75 or more depending where you want to put your router. Cost is usually a few dollars if you buy at an online computer store to probably 25 dollars at a bestbuy or similar. takes 30 seconds to complete.
If your computer has a network card or a Ethernet port, then use it.

And it will tell your default gateway, and type that into your address bar of your internet explorer, or whatever you use.
Then you will need to login to your router, depending on the router it will have a different username and password. Most routers standard password and username is %26quot;Admin%26quot; So try that if not look at this site for your routers login info.

Once you do that it will most likely ask for a email address and password to logon to your isp network. Your ISP should of gave you one. Put that into it, and try to connect.

Alright, make sure your ethernet is not disabled shut down the computer and unplug the power supply from the modem. Power up the modem first then turn on your computer. Make sure you leave the modem off for at least 10 minutes. Same goes with a router if you have one. I've seen this several times on both cable and DSL. Since there is only one IP address available for most home accounts, the interface that is %26quot;initialized%26quot; and connected is the only one that works. When you power cycle, the modem configures the interface that is currently connected, hopefully the Ethernet in this case, The ISP doesn't have to change anything to change interfaces. The advice to power down the modem is the correct way to fix this. Have a good one :)

Hey I'm trying to open my NAT so I can join more games on XBOX LIVE. problem is, if I change the port filtering options, it disconnects my laptop (Acer Inspiron, I can give more info if needed). does anyone know how to open the NAT to both xbox live and my laptop?

the simple and very effective solution for Xbox Live is to put your Xbox into a DMZ. I'm sure you're router has that option on it.
Basically what a DMZ does is that it opens all ports to your Xbox 360 (in essence giving it complete freedom and you won't have any connection issues.)
The option on your router is probably very intermediate. I know on a Linksys it just says %26quot;DMZ%26quot; and you type in an IP address. If this is the case you will type in the IP address you want your Xbox to be (192.168.0.175 for example). Save your settings. When you're done with that be sure to set your Xbox IP settings to MANUAL and give it the ip address you wrote in the DMZ (192.168.0.175).
Like i previously said, this setting in the router will open all ports to your xbox and you won't have any connection problems after that :)

Central Heating Problem (Radiator too hot)?
I have Nefit 3030 combi boiler, when I use hot water for long period (shower or dish washer) after that I see that all radiators become hot and the boiler doesn't stop(the room thermostat is set to 16 degree but the temperature of the room is around 22) then I have to change the room thermostat a little bit (doesn't matter if I decrease it or increase) then the boiler stops (works normally).
I have changed three port valve but it doesn't help.
how should I fix the problem?

I would suggest you to use the different browser and harvest the lots of perfect features..instead of IE. How do I setup ports for Mocha VNC [iPhone] when I have two Macs on the router I want to connect to?
So my roommate and I are on the same router. We each have one iMac and one iPhone. We are trying to use Mocha VNC on our iPhones to connect to our Macs. We've gotten each connection to work, but they only work on port 5900 (i.e., I can have his Mac on 5900 and mine on 5901 and his works and mine won't, or I can flip it so I'm on 5900 and he's on 5901 and then mine works and his won't). Obviously, port 5900 can only forward traffic to one IP address (unless I'm ignorant there!)

Yeah seams like a lot of people are having that problem. I have a linksys router, and I cant change the NAT to Open either. I can only set it to moderate.
You can try upgrading the firmware of your router. Other than that, I think you have to buy a compatible router.

That's completely wrong all's you have to do is open the ports on your router by typing in 192.168.1.1 on the address bar on your web browser. Then find out your xbox's Ip and type it into the App/Gaming section. The your NAT should be open. If not just disable your wireless internet firewall.

I have a home network with a desktop host to which the printer is directly connected. The other is a laptop. I set up printer sharing for the laptop and the host and printer (I see the 2 person incon on both computers). Im using an AIRTEL VSAT connection, i get speeds upto 1 mbps, but im not able to download through torrents. all other http and ftp download modes are possible, but even p2p is disabled!!
When i try torrents it connects to trackers and receives no of seeds n peers, but i wont get any single kb of data.
So, how to tackle this problem???
I used all kinds of port forwarding, tunneling and many apps, but nothing helps, even port changing doesnt help..

I have a laptop which is working fine , i'm running avg virus and spyware software. I use azureus as torrent downloader which works great. The issue i have is that none of the above software seems to connect - i have uninstalled both msn and windows live messenger but to no avail it won't let me connect without an xp error message. so in other words it won't work at all same with kazzaa and exeem but azureues works fine , i thought it was a firewall issue but even with the virus and firewall switched off it still doesn't work what am i missing - i have port forwarding set up on azureus could that be a problem? I can't think of anything else apart from recovery but i don't want to do that. it used to work fine could it be a virus , i have scanned but nothing comes up. Apparently i can change the port setting in interent options but i don't know how to do this either all in all i'm a tad stuck someone please help !!!

You've got Azureus installed, and this works ok.

I would suggest that you type exactly what your error message is into Google, and you'll find some pages that will help. Probably some pages from the Microsoft Knowledgebase, and some forum posts where people have fixed this problem.
My other suggestion is to open up one of the programs that doesn't work and find the configuration or options page. Find out which ports it's using (if it's in there - you may need to check the application's help pages) and then set these up for port forwarding in your router (if you have one) and open the ports on your firewall.
I don't know which firewall you're using, but if you Google the name of your firewall and the words %26quot;open ports%26quot; then I'm sure you'll find a step-by-step guide.
If you have a router and need to set up the port forwarding for these ports, you can probably also use Google with the make/model of your router and the words %26quot;port forwarding%26quot; and perhaps %26quot;guide%26quot; to find out how to set this up.
I doubt very much there's a virus involved here. Lots of people who don't know better suggest a virus is the culprit when it's very unlikely a virus would just stop your applications connecting. It depending how dodgy your error message appears though I guess.

My Zune isn't loading. I think the battery and/or software is having problems. Any suggestions?
I was listening to music and the Zune said it had plenty of battery left, but suddenly it died. When I tried turning it on, it showed the loading screen and then went black. I plugged it into my computer, and it shows the loading screen, the white bar filling up, and then it goes black again. It does this repeatedly no matter how long I leave the Zune plugged in. Given that it's been plugged in for 24 hours now, the loading screen lasts longer than it did at first, yet the Zune still won't actually work. I've tried opening the software, closing the software, unplugging the Zune, changing USB ports. The computer isnt recognizing the Zune as being plugged into a USB port. USB printer USB002 is Virtual?
I remember a long time ago looking at the device Manager and seeing the individual usb ports. I have an application that does not print and it is set to the only default printer at USB002 which says it is virtual. How can I manually attach it to a physical usb port and have those ports show up in the Device manager. When I try to install the printer it automatically selects the port. If I try to change the port it says access denied.

You really can't change the tune of the woofer itself but you can change the tune of the box by adjusting port lengths, adding or removing sound deading material inside the box, and adjusting the overall box size.
Your risks by doing this are 1. your box will sound worse 2. you may over extend your woofer causing damage.
I would recommend that you pick up some deading material (cotton, felt, foam, dynamat etc..) to attach to the inner of the box first. This will soften the harshness of the soundwaves reflecting off the back of your box and cause it to sound deeper/lower.

A subwoofer has its own natural tuned frequency (on specs as Fs), but that isn't a recommendation as to how to tune the box. Basically, when you want to have a ported box, tune it to what you like. If you listen to a lot of rap and songs that have low, low bass, then tune it low. Otherwise it would be okay to tune it slightly higher. And no, the sub wouldn't be damaged. If you want the tuning of the enclosure to be lower, then basically you want the port length longer, or the port size smaller. However, increased port area, from what I've experienced, tends to be louder. For example, a 4%26quot; port thats 6%26quot; long may tune a box the same as 3 6%26quot; ports that are a foot long each, however the 3 6%26quot; ports would seemingly be louder. I dunno, basically to answer your question, no damage will be done. Tune your box to what you listen to and enjoy.

Your risks by doing this are 1. your box will sound worse 2. you may over extend your woofer causing damage.
I would recommend that you pick up some deading material (cotton, felt, foam, dynamat etc..) to attach to the inner of the box first. This will soften the harshness of the soundwaves reflecting off the back of your box and cause it to sound deeper/lower.

A subwoofer has its own natural tuned frequency (on specs as Fs), but that isn't a recommendation as to how to tune the box. Basically, when you want to have a ported box, tune it to what you like. If you listen to a lot of rap and songs that have low, low bass, then tune it low. Otherwise it would be okay to tune it slightly higher. And no, the sub wouldn't be damaged. If you want the tuning of the enclosure to be lower, then basically you want the port length longer, or the port size smaller. However, increased port area, from what I've experienced, tends to be louder. For example, a 4%26quot; port thats 6%26quot; long may tune a box the same as 3 6%26quot; ports that are a foot long each, however the 3 6%26quot; ports would seemingly be louder. I dunno, basically to answer your question, no damage will be done. Tune your box to what you listen to and enjoy.

How big a difference, in felt recoil is there between factory ported glocks and the standard models?
I have a standard glock 19 for duty use, and a glock 26 for off duty carry. I am thinking about getting another 19 for home defense (the wife loves my 19 duty gun). Night sights and a light are a must, but how big a difference does the factory porting really make? Does the porting drastically change felt recoil, or does the added cost out weigh the overall gain? I usually have my 26 and 19 loaded with speer gold dot 147+p hp's. In the little glocks, the speers really pack a bang. The recoil has never really been an issue for me. But if the porting makes a MAJOR difference, it may be worth the money for my wife's gun. Do the porting holes open up the slide innards to a major dirt fest? I have never even held a ported glock, that's what all the questions are about. Thanks for any feedback!

I have been using Outlook 2003 to send and receive Yahoo mail quite happily for a number of months but in the last few days I have been unable to send it. I have tried deleting the account in Outlook and setting it back up again as per the instructions on the Yahoo Mail help system, and have tried changing the port number to 587 but nothing seems to work. Why has this suddenly stopped working and how do I get it to work again?

When in the uTorrent settings I see the button for %26quot;randomize port%26quot; and the port number changes when you click it. Now my question is how do I know which port I should use? I do not want to have to set up a static ip for port forwarding but I just wanted to know if there was a way I could see which out of my ports was the best for my uTorrent client.

I have also tried changing the port bittorrent uses to see if that makes a difference, but that doesn't work either.
Any ideas how to get my downloads working? I know information about the unviersity's network would be helpful but unfortunately I have none!

Why does my webcam freezes when it used to work fine on YIM?
I use my web cam on a daily basis with my gfriend. Shes on dial up, and im on DSL. It used to work fine, only freezing every now and then because of the dial up connection. But a few weeks ago, my webcam started to only works for a minute before it freezes, then after around 2 minutes my webcam unfreezes and she start getting images that where supposedly sent at least one minute ago (meaning, lots of lag).
Since the problem started, ive re installed my webcam, re installed yahoo messenger, changed usb port but the trouble persists. Her webcam works perfect, the only one with the problem is mine.
I also use the webcam to talk with my sister, but i use it on Skype and i have no problems there. Both my sister and me have broadband.
So, any ideas why is this happening? and more importantly, how to fix it?

Seems that a codec driver (I forgot which company), was being updated cuz logitech was using another companys codec driver. They were changing to the windows codec driver. I found out also that the company was now charging $30 to update to their driver and is probably why Logitech switched to the free windows codec driver. Call logitech up and ask them. My fusion works now. If you can buy another cam, buy the logitech cam, that has the one that you can project pictures of yourself on them. If you can still return the cam and get the money back on you cam if it is still possible. If you can or decide to get another cam, remember only a few logitech cams have this ability to project pics on the cam. Check the logitech site to find out.
